Friday Fun: Springing & Falling
Friday, November 3, 2017 90 Comments
PLEASE don’t make us
change our clocks again! ::sigh::
Meanwhile, let’s try to laugh the whole thing off© Madelyn Griffith-Haynie, CTP, CMC, ACT, MCC, SCAC
from the Friday Funnies SeriesQuick Intro before we get to the Funnies
Is it just me or didn’t we just change all the clocks? Or at least we were supposed to. (Surely I’m not the only one who still has some of her clocks and watches set at the same time they were supposed to be set the last time we fell back?)
Am I the only one confused by the fact that in America they call it “Daylight Saving Time” whichever way the clock gets set?
Hmmm . . . well, in case anyone doubts the fact that my expertise is the result of life-long personal experience, this post might remove the doubts, at least where my relationship to time is concerned!
Who WANTS this nonsense? Does anybody actually like dancing this springingly/fallingly two-step?
Ho hum. It’s not like it matters to anyone in charge anyway.
Don’t forget it’s coming up again this Sunday, at least for those of us living in America (or is that technically Monday morning – or maybe Saturday night late?)
Whatever! Let’s get the weekend started with a few chuckles.
Take a look at a few time-related funnies that I tripped across, mostly on Pinterest.
How many of the situations below make YOU nod your head?
YOU PLAY TOO

Reminding you of what I disclosed in the introduction to this series, Funnies about Perspective: unlike the ongoing Sunday Smiles and Monday Funnies you’ll find on Chris The Story Reading Ape’s Blog, my Friday Funnies will show up only occasionally, usually clustered around a theme.
If things seem to have gotten a tad serious in the world – or on ADDandSoMuchMORE.com – get ready for another hit of humor, most likely another Friday Funny.

SO true, Christy – for a brain-based reason, btw. Until and unless we can get this crazy system changed, the best thing we CAN do about it is laugh.

Loved this, Madelyn! Don’t we all need a little humor, especially with this?! I do NOT look forward to school the next day. First, the children really can’t adjust and understand. Then, it gets dark by 4:30 and children are scared at the end of the school day, thinking their Moms and Dads have forgotten them. All the words in the world don’t really help those first few days. So, thank you for the humor!

I don’t envy your challenge, Jennie. Making things even tougher, I imagine a few parents DO show up late while they themselves are adjusting.
OH how I wish we could get rid of this nonsense!!!

I’m getting ready to email parents about the time change and talking to their child. “No, Mommy won’t be late. The sun is setting earlier, so it will be dark.” Not easy, and those words would only be the tip of the conversation iceberg. Did I ever tell you that I started my blog because of teaching and guiding parents? Decades of newsletters, all so important to families of young children. Happy Sunday to you, Madelyn. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep tonight. 🙂

Good for you for thinking of enrolling the parents, Jennie. Hopefully they will realize the importance of actually having the conversation and answering questions as best they can.
I think it is wonderful that you began your blog to educate parents. Nobody’s born knowing this stuff, and those who were not well-parented wouldn’t have been likely to pick up parenting tips without some guidance & info.
We’re alike in that we are driven to help – and that we began putting professional info online. How do you get your parents to read/respond to your emails? Do you have to start each class by asking the kids who knows why it will be getting dark today before Mommy or Daddy comes to pick you up and discussing the fact that the sun goes to bed earlier? I’m guessing that you’d have to remind them at the other end of the school day as well.
TRULY – this DST idea is *lousy* on so many fronts!!!

I believe that educating parents is 50% of what I do that is important for children. Really. When I started teaching, my director insisted that teachers write newsletters to parents. Oh, the groans from the staff! Then, she would say, “Take one paragraph and educate them about something, anything.” She was so right! Instead of a newsletter that told families we did this and that, it added why.
My blog posts are often the newsletters to families. The four that Sally Cronin published from my archives were just that. I have a query letter out to agents, as I think bundling many of those letters into a book for parents and teachers would be a good thing. Fingers crossed. 🤞
We are alike and driven to help. That’s probably why we picked our professions. How do I get parents to read and respond? By making it exciting to read. Sound corny? If It is flat and dry, they may just skim over it. For example, if I’m writing about how the brain responds to physical activity, which is interesting to us but not so much to them, I tell a story of how it worked and what happened in the classroom. So, I start at the end, paint a picture with words, then backtrack to why it worked. Make sense?
Let’s hope tomorrow goes smoothly when it is dark at 4:30. Yes, the dreaded DST. Happy Sunday to you, Madelyn! 🙂

We are similar in our belief that educating the parents is essential. I don’t work with kids because I strongly believe that working with their parents is a much more effective strategy.
I see my clients for a brief time period each week. And then what, where kids are concerned? They have little control over the environment to which they return, and an underdeveloped PFC that is not up to the task of recontexting.
If I can impress upon a parent what helps, what does not, and what actually makes things worse, THEY can make a much bigger difference with their kids than I ever could.
Congrats on getting your book published – and happy Sunday to you too.

Yes, YES! If we don’t educate the parents, we don’t help the child. In my world of teaching, most parent education from teachers is reactive, not proactive, and therefore not really an education at all. Pretty sad.
If I could wave a magic wand, I’d make fellow teachers see that educating the parent means educating the child.
No congratulations (yet), Madelyn. My book is only in the query letter stage to agents. I am the glass half-full, here.
Many thanks. So good to talk and share ideas. Best to you, Madelyn.

Great cartoons, Madelyn. This is one think we don’t have to worry about in Africa. It reminds me of the nursery rhyme:
A dillar a dollar
A ten o’ clock scholar
What makes you come so soon
You used to come at ten o’ clock
and now you come at noon.

Lucky you, Robbie. I haven’t thought about that nursery rhyme in years. It never made any sense to me – LOL – just like Daylight Savings Time.

Omg, these are hysterical! I love what the Old Indian said. How true! And the brain waking us up 2 hours earlier than normal … Our poor bodies don’t know which end of the blanket is up! Thanks for the laughs, girlfriend. I hope I can still see the humor in this after tomorrow night 🙂 ♥

I’m struggling with that a bit today myself, Tina. My poor body doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo about the time change. I keep coming back to read the funnies to reset my mood every time I notice that I failed to change yet another of my clocks (alarms, primarily, and the ones that take a ladder to access).
I finally got my systems relatively in order in my last apartment, but haven’t quite gotten it down in this one. ::harumph!:: It’s a wonder to me that our political leaders haven’t struggled enough personally to STOP this idiocy – but meanwhile, we try to laugh about it, right?

I guess it’s really no different to living near a line that divides time zones. I leave a few hours drive away from the border between two states. One changes time, the other doesn’t. We can celebrate New Year’s Eve twice when we go to visit. I guess living in one and working in the other could be confusing though. 🙂
