November includes N-24 Awareness Day
Along with Advocacy & Awareness

Each month is peppered with a great many special dates dedicated to raising awareness about important emotional, physical and psychological health issues that intersect, exacerbate or create problems with cognition, mood and attention management.
ALL great blogging prompts!
As October comes to a close, it is almost time for a brand new month filled with days designed to remind us all to help spread awareness and acceptance to help overcome the STIGMA associated with “invisible disabilities” and cognitive challenges — as well as to remain grateful for our own mental and physical health as we prepare for the upcoming holidays.
Mark your blogging calendars . . .
. . . and start drafting your own awareness posts to share here. Scroll down for the November dates, highlighting important days and weeks that impact mental health — as well as those remaining active for the entire month. (The calendar is not my own, btw, so not all mental health awareness events linked below are included ON the calendar.)
If I’ve missed anything, please let me know in the comments below so that I can add it to the list.
Attention Bloggers: If you write (or have written) an article that adds content to any of these categories — or other mental health related days in November — please leave us all a link in the comment section. I will move it into its appropriate place on the list in the article, or into the Related Content section. It will remain for next year’s calendar as long as the link works.
And please feel free to reblog this post if time runs short.
Awareness in November
Remember, mental health & attentional challenges are NOT always genetic.
The attentional struggles you will hear or read about most frequently are exhibited by individuals diagnosed with one of the ADD/ADHD varietals, usually associated with a genetic component – but EVERYONE struggling with mental health issues, TBI and addiction has attentional struggles that ride the draft.

Types of Attentional DeficitsAlmost everyone experiences situational deficits of attention and cognition any time the number of events requiring our attention and focus exceeds our ability to attend. Situational challenges are those transitory lapses that occur whenever our ability to attend is temporarily impaired – when there are too many items competing for focus at the same time.
Just a FEW Examples:
Cognitive lapses and attentional struggles frequently occur when the brain is temporarily impaired or underfunctioning due to:
- Medication, alcohol or other substances
- Grief or other strong emotional responses
- Stress, especially prolonged stress
- Sleep deprivation
- Too much to do and too little time (juggling problems)
NOW let’s take a look at what else for which November is noted.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Time to Take a Closer Look
(Excellent Info-graphic & article)
President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in 1983. At that time, fewer than 2 million Americans had Alzheimer’s.
SINCE THAT TIME, a little less than 3.5 decades later, the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease has soared to nearly 5.4 million – over a million more every decade in the US alone.

I’m so glad you do these monthly calendar posts as you set out what’s to come so we can make the most of those special awareness days. I’m sorry to read that you lost two siblings to diabetes. My uncle passed away far too soon and he had severe diabetes. On a lighter note, it’s your birthday month, yay! 🙂

I appreciate your empathy, Christy – and I am sorry to read that losing your uncle to diabetes has you closer to understanding than either of us would like.
Thanks, too, for noting that this is my birthday month. YAY!

Great post, Madelyn. I really appreciate your introductory quote. We do need to remember that every little bit we do may be a whole lot to somebody else and contributes enormously to the greater good. I appreciate the contribution you are making to a more positive society with the promotion of education, kindness and compassion.
I also include a calendar of dates in my monthly newsletters. They are the ones that I think will be of most interest to educators. I have included many of the ones on the calendar, but not so many in your list. I have an additional one to add on 25 November – International Day for Elimination of Violence against women.
I see there is another day this month that requires a special observance on 29 – your birthday! Enjoy your special month in the lead up to your day. I hope many many good things are in store for you.
Best wishes,
Norah

Thanks, Norah. I’ll add your suggestion to the calendar itself – as violence negatively impacts mental health in a manner that needs to be vehemently opposed.
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes.

IMHO, NONE of us get enough acknowledgment, Paul.
Do you ever tire of hearing what a wonderful, imaginative, writer you are – or that somebody loves one of your books? 🙂 (and I DO, btw)

Not so – in any case, Paul, I was looking to respond in kind. And it is absolutely the TRUTH!
And thanks for the acknowledgement, btw – made me smile from ear to ear.

Thanks for that quote! I love it, and it is one I needed to hear today. Sometimes being “just one” can feel depressing, until I remember to take the “just” away. I can’t do it all, but I can make a difference….

Thanks, Mike. As I’ve commented before, The Awareness Calendars are certainly not the most fascinating of the articles I put together here, but they might be among the most important – especially for anyone who gets themselves (or a loved one) checked and helped!

LOL – nice try – but we both know that “need” word is a total hyperbole.
I really wish I could read and comment on everybody’s posts every time they post, Mike, but it’s just not possible. I do my very best every single day, but keeping up is already practically a full-time job.
Please don’t take it personally when I can’t respond to “need.” Even my clients must live with the reality that they must work within the timeframes of the sessions they’ve booked with me.

Thank you, Michael, for passing these Awareness Reminders into the rest of the world — spreading empathy and the need for MORE RESEARCH FUNDING around the world. I hope maybe even those at the top in the USA – especially those in charge of appropriations – might get that message!
